Meet Erika Menezes

Graduate

Erika's Story

I started at Tegel fresh out of Uni with a Bachelor’s in Marketing and Management. I applied for the graduate programme because Tegel is such a well-known company, I figured it’d be a great place to learn (plus I really like chicken). I had no idea what I wanted to do, but the programme gave me the chance to try a bit of everything, like a taster for my career.

My first rotation was in Sales, then I moved into Commercial Strategy. Each rotation came with a steep learning curve, but also a lot of support. I was surrounded by people who were happy to share their knowledge which helped me figure out what I was good at (and what I wasn’t). I developed my communication skills, I’ve always been a talker, but I’ve learnt how to tailor what I say so it actually lands. And I’ve learnt how to prioritise. Some days it feels like triage in an emergency room, you’ve got to quickly figure out what’s urgent and what can wait.

After about 18 months in the grad programme, a full-time role came up in the Foodservice South Island team as a Key Account Executive, so I packed my bags and started a new chapter in Christchurch.

Tegel’s fast paced and always evolving, which keeps things exciting. I love that no two days are the same, there’s a mix of curveballs and comforting routines. And my team is great. Honestly, having cool colleagues makes even the busiest days fun.

What’s really made a difference for me is the culture. There’s such a strong “foster your people” energy. People genuinely want you to do well. I’ve been trusted with real projects, and even when I’ve made mistakes (because that’s inevitable when you’re learning!), I’ve always had someone just a question away.

And then there’s the other grads. It felt like starting high school together: all a bit overwhelmed and definitely relying on each other. We supported each other along the way and became real friends.

Thinking about applying? Do it. It’s such a valuable experience.  You’ll figure out what you’re good at, get involved in real work, and learn so much along the way. Just be open to trying new things, and back yourself.
